Franklin Reservoir Improvements

Thalle worked to combine 2 of the 3 reservoirs at the Franklin Water Treatment plant into one large reservoir, along with the inlet and overflow structures, and thousands of feet of new pipework. The project helped improve both the capacity and the reliability of the water supply for the city of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

Significant scope items included:
Excavation of a 250-million-gallon raw water storage reservoir and disposal of excess soil material off-site, demolition of existing raw water pipes, construction of an earth embankment dam approximately 42’ high and 1,300’ long, installation of geomembrane liner and geocomposite drainage materials, construction of a 40’ tall concrete intake tower structure, construction of cast-in-place concrete inlet and overflow structures, construction of underdrainage system, construction of approximately 1,800 linear feet of 84-inch raw water intake pipeline, approximately 250 linear feet of 102-inch raw water inlet pipeline, approximately 400 linear feet of 48-inch overflow spillway pipeline, in addition to piping on the project site ranging in size from 1-inch diameter to 48-inches in diameter, and valves and appurtenances.
