Thalle Awarded $36M Herbert Hoover Dike Rehab 10 & 12
August 15, 2013
The work includes demolition and removal of the existing Herbert Hoover Dike Culverts 10 and 12 and the construction of new water control structures S-273 and S-275 at the existing locations of culverts 10 and 12, respectively. Structure S-275 construction must be complete, operational, and accepted by the Government prior to starting any work on Structure S-273. The demolition and reconstruction efforts will require the installation of an earthen cofferdam within Lake Okeechobee and a steel sheet pile cofferdam at the landside of each culvert in order to dewater the construction sites. The S-273 and S-275 structures will include cast-in-place reinforced concrete foundations, headwalls, and culvert barrels (with steel liners). Combination flap/slide gates will be installed at the lakeside headwalls of each structure. S-273 will consist of two (2) 10-foot diameter culverts and S-275 will consist of three (3) 10-foot diameter culverts, each approximately 176 feet long. A cutoff wall will also be installed in the centerline of the embankment at both structures and the embankment reconstructed to match the existing crest elevation of the dike. Riprap will be installed along the lakeside embankment face and a control building will be installed at the landside work platform at each structure. Work also includes by-pass pumping, grassing and turbidity monitoring.
