Tully Construction Co. JV Completes Excavation of Water Siphon
June 12, 2015
In a Joint Venture with OHL USA, Tully Construction Co. has completed the excavation of water siphons between Brooklyn and Staten Island for the New York City Economic Development Corporation.
The work inculded the construction of a tunnel along which one pupe conveys drinking water beneath the bay of New York and connects the boroughs of Brooklyn and Staten Island, replacing two old main ducts. A Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) was used as well as–for the first time in New York– Earth Presure Balance Technology maintaining the ground pressure on the front in the same grade than if the tunnel was not running.
The project aslo includes the construction of both launching and extracting shafts, supply and install of pupeline–including the connections to existing networks on both sides–and the build of a chlorination station.
The depth of the new infrastructure allows for dredging of the area, allowing larger and deeper vessels to use the harbor.
